- Tytthaena parrisi, commonly known as ‘little hyena’
- Existed around 59 million years ago in the Paleocene epoch
- They were really small, spanning only up to 1.1m in length and 25cm in height!
- They weighed 5-10kg
- The little hyena lived across Western North America
- They are the oldest known genus and species in the Oxyaenidae family
- Tytthaena parrisi is one of 29 Oxyaenidae species
- They only had 2 molars in their mouth
- Despite being the oldest known Creodont, they were not directly related to hyyaenodontids
- They were carnivores
- They were placental mammals
