  • Tytthaena parrisi, commonly known as ‘little hyena’
  • Existed around 59 million years ago in the Paleocene epoch
  • They were really small, spanning only up to 1.1m in length and 25cm in height!
  • They weighed 5-10kg
  • The little hyena lived across Western North America
  • They are the oldest known genus and species in the Oxyaenidae family
  • Tytthaena parrisi is one of 29 Oxyaenidae species
  • They only had 2 molars in their mouth
  • Despite being the oldest known Creodont, they were not directly related to hyyaenodontids
  • They were carnivores
  • They were placental mammals
