Steph’s Extinct Animals Chapter 1: The Giant Cheetah

Naturally, Steph’s assistant ‘The Big Cheetah’ had to choose her own family to talk about first!

Here are some facts about the late Giant Cheetah.

  • Acinonyx pardinensis, commonly called Giant Cheetah.
  • Existed 700,000 years ago in the Quaternary Period, specifically within the Early Pliocene to Late Pleistocene epochs.
  • They were up to 2m in length and 1m in height
  • They weighed over 90kg.
  • The Giant Cheetah lived across Europe, Asia and Africa
  • Some fossils have been found in caves in Africa
  • Giant Cheetahs lived in wetlands
  • They appeared to eat deer and other similar animals that lived in the wetlands area
  • The possible cause of extinction was climate change
